CALEDON – winter grain and livestock production enterprise of note
This sought-after grain and livestock farming enterprise, situated within the picturesque Overberg region, comprises several adjoining farms located approximately 15 km south-east of Caledon.
It is a thriving operation, attributed not only to meticulous management but also to its impressive scale, excellent infrastructure, high-quality soils, and reliable winter rainfall.
The Overberg serves as one of the Western Cape’s most significant winter grain production hubs, with its economy deeply rooted in grain and livestock farming. The region boasts extensive agricultural resources and established support networks for sustainable production.
FARMING ENTERPRISE
The 925.23-hectare farming enterprise includes a fully operational 686.69-hectare arable unit, meticulously managed for winter grain production—comprising wheat, barley, canola and grazing. In addition, 15 hectares of lucerne and mixed grasses are under permanent pivot and sprayer irrigation.
Movable assets include a mass-grain truck, tractors, planters, harvester, and related implements. Livestock consists of Dohne Merino sheep and Bonsmara cattle with offspring. The operation holds duly registered water usage rights and is registered as an income-earning VAT entity. (A full list of movables and livestock is available on request.) An adjacent 117-hectare section is leased and also planted with winter grain.
SOIL AND CLIMATE
The Caledon area is characterised by rolling hills and undulating landscapes. The soils in this particular region primarily consist of the Glenrosa soil type—slightly gravelly with a distinct orange top layer—ranging from 170 mm to 300 mm in depth. These conditions are ideally suited to grain and winter pasture cultivation.
Soils across the Caledon area are largely shale-derived clays and sandstone-derived sands of the Bokkeveld Group, interspersed with marine and alluvial deposits. Common soil classifications include Glenrosa (gravelly, yellow topsoil) and Mispah (shallow, rocky, and porous). These soil types underpin the region’s successful agricultural diversity and grain yields.
The area enjoys evenly distributed rainfall throughout the year, resulting in cooler summer temperatures and soils with higher organic content—enhancing plant nutrition and productivity.
Average annual rainfall is approximately 600 mm. Typical winter grain yields are as follows: wheat (3.2 – 4.1 tons/ha), barley (3.8 tons/ha), and canola (1.4 – 2 tons/ha).
Water for irrigation and livestock is supplied by two boreholes producing 30 000 L/h and 33 000 L/h respectively, powered by both solar and Eskom electricity. Water is stored in one earth dam for irrigation and distributed through two concrete dams and one zinc dam to supply the operation comprehensively.
Official Water Usage Rights are in process of registration with the Theewaterskloof Water Users Association in terms of the National Water Act, 1998.
MANAGEMENT AND SECURITY
Security infrastructure includes strategically placed vision security cameras covering the buildings and access roads throughout the property.
The 2025 harvests will remain for the account of the current farming enterprise, to be completed by 30 November 2025. Farming movables necessary for the harvest and related operations will also remain in use until that date.
