SUTHERLAND: Livestock farm with river

This 4961-hectare farm is set in a panoramic location with sweeping views of the surrounding rugged mountains, undulating hills, valleys, plateaus, vast flat areas and a tree lined river which flow during the rainy season. Vegetation comprises of typical Karoo Hoogland vegetation and succulents after good winter rainfall. The Rhenoster River meanders through the farm.
The farm is located about 55 km from Sutherland on a well-surfaced gravel road.

This topography supports a diversity of vegetation with patches of grass, shrubs, bushes with denser riverine thicket and many mature trees along the banks of the dry river which traverse the farm. Due to this habitat system, there is a perfect balance in terms of a diversity of naturally available food for both browsers and grazers which increases the carrying capacity of the farm.

Situated in a safe environment. Infrastructure consists of a 3-bedroom old-fashioned farmhouse filled with character and charm. The kitchen is spacious, and the dining room / lounge is large. The outside of the house is not in good repair. Domestic water is obtained from a freshwater borehole. There is an outbuilding with 2 garage doors and storage rooms.

Farming infrastructure is a storage shed, sheep handling facilities, duly fitted borehole with submersible pump with electricity supply from Eskom. Water is pumped to various green JO-JO tanks from where it feed water for the livestock to troughs. The perimeter fence is jackal proof netting and there are various inner camps.

The carrying capacity is 1:32 LSU or 5.3-hectare for a small stock unit.

There is a rich ecosystem where game species roam free while one can enjoy the prolific natural scenery in this untamed wilderness. At present game like Kudu and Springbok roams the farm and indigenous small antelope such as Steenbok, Duiker, Klipspringer occur. In addition to the plains game, this farm has an exceptional nocturnal life, the sounds of which add to the peaceful atmosphere.

Both summer and winter rainfall occur in this area. The long-term average is approximately 150 - 250 per annum.

The farm consists of 1 title deed. There is a public road through the farm with very low traffic, mainly next-door neighbours. A servitude in favour of the adjacent downstream farm is registered from a weir in the river supplying irrigation water via a canal to the neighbour’s irrigation areas. Al costs and renovation is for the account of the neighbour.

The Eskom pump supply water to the 22-hectare arable land. Water from a weir in the river supplies gravity fed water for flood irrigation to the same irrigation areas. During a resent thunder storm the weir lapses and is in prosses of reparation.
