Wellington Area: A Farm You’ll Wish Was Yours

This 115-hectare farm is elevated against the slopes of the Groenberg, offering breathtaking views towards the Limietberg to the north-east and across the surrounding farmlands in the valley to the west. The setting is secluded and peaceful, where the clear sounds of nature and birdlife create an atmosphere of tranquillity. The farm rises along the Groenberg slopes, which become steeper higher up and are covered with natural vegetation, including proteas and, in places, wild buchu. The proteas were unfortunately damaged by a mountain fire.

Water
A natural spring in a mountain ravine provides a constant supply of clean water that flows gently down a small stream. This water feeds two large earth dams after each other further down the slope, as well as a substantial concrete reservoir. From this reservoir, the olive orchards are irrigated by gravity at approximately 3-bar pressure. Both the dams and the reservoir remain full throughout the year.

Production
Swiss Saanen goats are the most important farming enterprise on the farm and also requires the most intensive management. The herd is devided in groups to separate milking does from bucks (rams), non-milking does and kids, where they can graze on the grassy hills and protected by shelters from wind, rain and extreme summer heat. The whole environment let them feel safe and secure.

Their diet is supplemented with high quality lucerne with other fodders as well as good nutritional feed pellets. The milk from approximately 300–400 goats can be collected twice daily (12 hours apart) in a modern computerized dairy. Each goat is electronically identified by a number on the does ear during milking, with individual production data recorded and stored on computer. The dairy accommodates 24 goats at a time. Average production is approximately 3–4 litres of milk per goat per day. The butterfat content of Saanen goats varies between 3 – 3.5% and protein about 2.8 – 2.9%. The milk is cooled and stored for the production of fresh milk, yoghurt, and both soft speciality- and matured cheeses.

The farm’s branded dairy products are supplied directly to several retailers, including Woolworths, Checkers, Spar, and others.

The olive orchards cover approximately 15 hectares and consist of two cultivars, Mission and Frantoio, all under drip irrigation. Goat manure is spread in the tree rows to serve as slow-release organic fertilizer and to improve soil structure without burning plants. It is easy to handle, odourless and highly effective for fruit trees. The olive trees are harvested during autumn and the olives pressed on the farm, bottled, and distributed directly to retail clients.

Approximately 5 hectares of arable land are extra available for expanding production opportunities.

Infrastructure
The property includes a main residence, an additional house, five cottages, and three spacious storage buildings.

The crown jewel of the farm is the impressive main house with its striking architecture. Built with thick, solid walls and a slate-tiled roof, the home remains in excellent condition. It features seven bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, a spacious dining and living area, and a large kitchen. Exposed wooden beams and beautiful wooden floors add warmth and character to the interior. An additional outside room with a bathroom is also included. The house could not be fully inspected.

All buildings receive clean borehole water for domestic use.

Electricity is supplied by three-phase Eskom power, and a generator is available to supply electricity to the dairy facilities and the main residence when required.
