PHILIPPOLIS: MORE THAN JUST HUNTING

Location & Setting
Groot Waaihoek Game Reserve is an exceptional 1,350-hectare private reserve, ideally situated just 15 km from the quaint historic town of Philippolis and approximately 40 km from Colesberg. A short 3 km gravel access road leads you into a pristine, 3-metre-high game-fenced sanctuary set within an expansive and unspoiled Karoo landscape.

Landscape & Natural Features
The reserve boasts a striking and diverse topography, with roughly 60% consisting of rugged mountainous and apron terrain, dramatic cliffs, rolling hills, plateaus, and 40% wide-open plains. A river traverses the reserve, creating a natural lifeline through the veld. Its 4 km frontage, with perennial pools and reinforced weirs, supports a lush riverine corridor of tall trees, dense thickets, and reeds. After good rainfall upstream, the river flows strongly, further enriching this already fertile environment. The alluvial soils along the riverbanks, combined with sweet, palatable grasses, attract abundant wildlife and birdlife, making this a truly vibrant ecosystem.

Climate & Vegetation
Situated in a transitional rainfall region, the farm benefits from both summer and winter rainfall, with a long-term annual average of 300–350 mm. Vegetation is characteristic of the Karoo and includes natural shrubland, succulent Karoo species, and patches of valuable grazing such as red grass, buffalo grass, and sweet grasses, with some sourveld components. Dense riverine thickets dominated by Acacia thorn and Karee trees create ideal habitats—truly a haven for species such as giraffe, kudu, and eland.

Game & Wildlife Experience
Home to an impressive variety of game, the reserve currently supports species including sable, giraffe, golden wildebeest, waterbuck, impala, springbuck, blesbuck, red reedbuck, kudu, lechwe, eland, red hartebeest, zebra, common duiker, steenbok, as well as warthog and wild boar.

The area is renowned as a disease-free breeding region, thanks to its dry climate and mineral-rich soils—ideal for producing high-quality and healthy game. Limited and selective hunting practices have resulted in exceptional trophy sizes. A standout feature is the notably calm and approachable nature of the game, allowing for rare, close-up viewing experiences that significantly enhance the reserve’s appeal for both hunters and eco-tourism enthusiasts.

A fish-eagle breeding pair known for its unmistakable diagnostic call breeds annually in the reserve.

Activities & Lifestyle
Beyond hunting, the reserve offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including game drives, horseback safaris, quad biking, mountain biking, hiking and challenging 4x4 driving. The combination of diverse terrain and abundant wildlife creates an immersive and versatile lifestyle or tourism opportunity.

Infrastructure & Improvements
The main homestead is set within a lush, established garden shaded by mature trees. It offers four bedrooms (one en-suite), two spacious open-plan living areas, a separate TV lounge, office, and a modern kitchen with scullery and pantry. The home is complemented by two bathrooms and expansive verandas (stoeps) that provide panoramic views over the tree-lined river, towering cliffs, poplar groves, and distant mountain ranges. An inviting outdoor braai area enhances the sense of connection with nature. A spacious second house with open plan kitchen / lounge / TV room boasts with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Also situated within a mature garden. Another 2 bedroom house is renovated and in good repair.

Additional infrastructure includes numerous well-maintained farm buildings such as open sheds, horse stables, livestock handling facilities, and various outbuildings. Labourers’ cottages have been newly renovated and are in excellent condition. Electricity is supplied by 50 kVA solar system with lithium batteries as well as Eskom. A 100 kVA generator as backup system is installed and immediately available if needed.

Furthermore, the reserve is equipped with 4 quality PTZ camera systems covering all the buildings and the veldt.

Water & Irrigation

Water supply is reliable and well-developed, sourced from natural fountains, perennial pools, and boreholes equipped with windmills for drinking water for the game as well as the 2 strong boreholes are both equipped with solar to pump water to the concrete storage dam during daytime. Water is stored in reservoirs and distributed across the reserve to drinking troughs, residences, and gardens. One borehole also serves as a backup for irrigation.

Irrigation infrastructure includes two centre pivots covering approximately 10 hectares of pasture watered by permanent fixed sprayers and 7 hectares of lucerne, along with an additional 7 hectares under fixed sprinkler irrigation. The fertile alluvial soils are particularly well-suited to lucerne production, which thrives in the sandy-loam soils and provides high-quality feed for sheep and horses during drier periods. Registered water rights are in place.

Fencing & Carrying Capacity
The reserve is fully enclosed with 3-metre-high game-proof fencing (with only a small section currently being completed). It is divided into two large camps, with several smaller inner camps near the homestead for management purposes. The estimated carrying capacity is approximately 1 LSU per 13 hectares.

Livestock & Horses & Movables
Nguni cattle, dorper sheep, horses, ponies and poultry are includes as well as all the movables and furniture (except few personal stuff).
